rep> Chick Churchill - You And Me (1973 uk, classy prog rock, 2011 remaster)

Michael George "Chick" Churchill is a classically-trained pianist best-known as on/off keyboard man with Ten Years After, possibly the archetypal British blues/rock band, featuring Alvin Lee's lightning-fast guitar work.

You and Me is Churchill's only solo album, is an unfairly forgotten rock gem with quite strong, progressive influences. A bevy of famous friends Jethro Tull's Martin Barre, Cozy Powell, Leo Lyons, Rick Lee, Roger Hodgson, Bernie Marsden, Garry Pickford Hopkins, it’s really hard to imagine a better configuration on one record.

  1. Churchill began playing the piano at the age of six and studied classical music until he was fifteen . He became interested in blues and rock music , and joined his first band " Sons of Adam " in Nottingham . Churchill then met Alvin Lee of The Jaybirds . At first , Churchill joined the band as its road manager , but he soon became the keyboard player. In November 1966 there was a name change to " Ten Years After " . With this group , Churchill played at major rock festivals including Woodstock in 1969 , and the Isle of Wight Festival on 29 August 1970 .
In 1973 he recorded a solo album " You and Me " (Chrysalis 1051)All songs written by Chick Churchill. Produced and Strings written and arranged by Chick Churchill. Engineered by Gregg Jackman. Mixed by Matthew Fisher is pretty typical of its era, consisting of lightweight singer-songwriter fare with added keyboards, or middle-of-the-road rock with no outstanding features, as dated as 'I'm with stupid' T-shirts and maroon and black stack heel shoes. A bevy of famous friends (Jethro Tull's Martin Barre, Cozy Powell and various members of pre-fame Supertramp included) do little to liven up the proceedings. Next to no obvious Mellotron on the album, with Churchill only noticeably adding any to opener Come And Join Me, with some background strings that add little to the track. The strings on a couple of other tracks appear to be real, making this a pretty low priority on your 'Mellotron must-haves' list.
Ten Years After broke up in 1976 and Churchill became Professional Manager at Chrysalis Music . The company was then owned by his manager , Chris Wright . In 1977 , he left to found Whitsett Churchill Music Publishing with Tim Whitsett , publishing and promoting American artists , especially from the south .
